If you’ve been looking into different strollers, you may have wondered why it is that while some strollers out on the market today have a weight capacity of 35 lbs, while others can accommodate a child of up to 55 lbs in weight.

Parents also often ask up to what age and weight can they keep using a stroller for their child, and in this article, we will look into these sorts of questions and answer them to the best of our ability.

Big kid stroller – what is it?

Let’s start at the beginning and go over just what a big kid stroller is.

A big kid stroller can accommodate a child that’s heavier and taller than your those children in traditional strollers.  To that end, a big kid stroller has a higher weight limit and a longer backrest.  Having features such as these makes them more suitable and appropriate for older children, even those aged 5 and 6 years old.

Now, you might be thinking that such a stroller, capable of accommodating a bigger child, will be very big, bulky, and heavy.  However, this is not always the case.

In addition to the standard full-sized strollers for older children, you can also get umbrella strollers for big kids, which are more lightweight than their standard big kid-sized counterparts, and are really easy to lift.

In addition to these, you can of course also get double and jogging strollers for big kids, although these tens have a heavier build to them (although this isn’t strictly always the case - more on that later).

When and why would parents need a big kid stroller?

Some people are surprised when they see a 3 or 4-year-old in a stroller, and the parents pushing the stroller are sometimes even treated with scorn.

But people really shouldn’t pass judgement like that.  Using a big kid stroller for a three-year-old does not mean that the child has not yet learned to walk.  Young kids may not be used to walking long distances and can’t make the whole route on foot, and they can get really tired after a long walk.

And it can be more convenient for parents too.  Bigger kids are too heavy to carry long distances, and using a stroller is far quicker than going at the pace of the child.

And that leads us nicely to the next section.

When big kid stroller is useful for parents

1. For a child who grows faster than his peers and needs bigger stroller

Every child grows at a different rate.  Sometimes a 2-year-old child can be as tall and as heavy as a 3-year-old child, and so on.  A child who’s growing quickly may well need a big kid stroller to accommodate his/her height and weight.

2. For an older child who still wants to ride in a stroller/can’t do long distances

Even when a small child can walk really well, they’re bound to get tired when covering long distances.  When it comes to long strolls with a toddler who likes to walk, but sometimes gets tired, a good choice for a stroller would be an umbrella one.  That way when the child is ready to walk again, you can just carry the stroller.

3. On vacations

When you’re sightseeing you’re often on your feet a lot.  Plus big kid strollers are handy when you’re waiting in airport queues too.

4. For a kid recovering from a surgery

If a child has recently had surgery and their mobility is limited, a stroller with a larger capacity can provide greater comfort.

5. For a child with special needs

For an older child who struggles to walk due to medical reasons, a big kid stroller can be a real help.  Such a stroller can be very safe and comfortable for your child, and at the same time provide some much-appreciated convenience for you, making errands and trips to the doctors a breeze.

What to consider when buying a big kid stroller

Weight Capacity

The maximum weight capacity you would usually find on a standard stroller is about 35 or 40 pounds.

But luckily manufacturers seem to have found a gap in the market for strollers for bigger children.  And meet that demand they have designed single strollers that feature a maximum weight limit 55, 65, and in some cases even 75 pounds.

Double strollers for big kids meanwhile have a maximum weight limit of 100 or even 110 pounds.

Seat

A big kid stroller, in order to accommodate a larger child, will feature a roomier seat, a longer backrest, and consequently a higher canopy.  Some big kid strollers have the canopy set so high that even 5-year-olds don’t even scrape their head on the canopy.

Although older kids don’t tend to nap as much as younger children do while strolling, some models of big kid strollers do feature a reclining seating position.  We would argue that this reclining seat feature can be of value to older and bigger children, and can even be crucial for their comfort on longer journeys.

Canopy

The canopy of a big kid stroller should be wide and high, that way the stroller can still accommodate them as they gradually grow in height.

We would also recommend that you look out for a canopy that’s expandable in order to provide adequate shelter from the weather, whether it’s from the rain on wet days or to provide shade from the sun on hot days.

Frame

In order to adequately accommodate a bigger child, of say 50 to 100 pounds in weight, the frame needs to be very strong and also robust.  To that end, it will need to be composed of high-quality materials.

Other Features

The additional features of a big kid stroller run parallel to those on a standard stroller.  These can include for example quick and compact fold, a large storage basket, and an adjustable handlebar.  You can also get models that feature a special strap that allows you to carry it on your shoulder.

Big kid strollers can have different kinds of wheels, some will have plastic wheels, some rubberized, and others can be air-filled.  Some models can also feature a suspension system for a more cushioned ride.

There is also all manner of accessories you can get for these strollers.  Sometimes these accessories come included in the price, but other times you may have to pay separately.

Speaking of price, big kid strollers can really vary a lot in price, with some coming in at just $150, while others can come to as much as $700.
