Bugaboo Donkey 2 2018 vs Bugaboo Donkey 2017 - Comparison Table
Bugaboo Donkey2 Review (2018)
We’re going to preface this by saying that the Bugaboo Donkey was already a fantastic stroller. This is a highly versatile convertible stroller that allows parents to switch between different seats, and it has even gone from a single version to a double version!
The stroller is most certainly a luxury, with a stylish design that has been loved by so many moms. In fact, the newer version is even more comfortable and convenient for parents.
The stroller is ideal for parents that need a lot of flexibility and want a stroller that is multifunctional and is going to grow with their expanding family. It’s not only perfect for parents of one baby, but it’s also ideal for families with twins, or for families that currently have one child but are looking to have a second too.
In fact, the manufacturer has gone the extra mile and upgraded this much loved stroller to give parents an even more comfortable and convenient vehicle.
So what were the main changes made for the Bugaboo Donkey 2?
Bugaboo Donkey2 2018 - Wheels
The Donkey2 features totally different wheels that have foam-filled tires. This is possibly the biggest change in this model.
The original Bugaboo Donkey had air filled tires, and while these are grade for smooth riding over terrains like pavement, cobblestone and grass, they have a glaring problem in that they can deflate.
This can be pretty irritating because it means you will need to remember to pump up the tires every now and again, and you can even end up getting a flat tire in the middle of a stroll. This lineup of strollers was the only kind to feature air tires and with the newest version they thankfully chose to change that.
The Bugaboo Donkey2 has foam filled tires that won’t deflate. They’re pretty awesome because they mimic the feeling you get with air pumped tires. So, you will get a smooth ride like you would with the original Bugaboo Donkey, but without running the risk of deflated tires. This is a pretty awesome addition that is certainly welcomed by many parents.
On a quick side note though, if you already have the Bugaboo Donkey it’s possible to buy these new wheels to use on your current stroller! Another big selling point of these highly versatile strollers.
Bugaboo Donkey2 2018 - Suspension and Frame
With the new model you also get an upgraded frame that’s very stable and doesn’t wobble. As a result of this, you can expect this stroller to last you a number of years.
It even has an updated all wheel suspension, and this is going to give even more stability, it’s easier to push and the ride is smoother. In addition, it has fantastic weight distribution so whether you use the stroller for an infant or a toddler, the stroller is going to remain sturdy and isn’t going to pull to the side.
Bugaboo Donkey2 2018 - The Side Luggage Basket
The Donkey2 has an upgraded side luggage basket. This basket is the same color as the main fabric. It also has a cover which is handy because it ensures that your valuables are kept safe, and they are safe from the elements.Whether you are in the sun, the rain or the snow, you can be sure that your essentials will remain safe in this handy side luggage basket. You can check out the different color variations later on in this article.
The cover is also pretty useful if your toddler likes to grab everything in sight and likes to launch things into the air. With the last version a child could easily reach into the side basket and throw things out of the basket, and you don’t have this problem with the 2018 version.
When the luggage basket is covered up you will also have easy access to all of your necessities as there is a zipper in the cover. Because of this, you don’t have to remove the whole cover each time you want to check your phone.
The luggage basket also has two handles so it’s even possible to take the basket grocery shopping. This certainly saves you from carrying the bags around with you manually while you’re already pushing your baby.
In fact, the biggest upgrade with this model is the capacity of the luggage basket. The last version was able to hold 11 lbs, whereas the new one can hold up to 22 lbs. With this you can fit a lot of stuff inside, keeping your essentials close at hand or you can even use it for shopping. Seems like the perfect upgrade to us!
Bugaboo Donkey2 2018 - Fabrics and Customization
The last version of the Donkey comes with a black fabric base and you were only able to choose the canopy color. With the Bugaboo Donkey2 you will get a huge amount of customization. You are able to choose from a range of different colors and you can make your own Donkey2 that will fit with your style.
To start with, you can select a frame color out of either aluminum or black. From there, you are able to customize the color of the base fabric which is also the color of the bassinet base, apron, toddler seat and the side luggage basket. There are three different options here: black, grey melange, and blue melange.
In fact, you are even able to choose the color of the canopy and cover for the side lugga basket. There are 11 colors to choose from here: olive green, ruby red, black, sunrise yellow, soft pink, sky blue, red melange, blue melange, grey melange, waves print and botanic print. The final colors there are available in the signature collection.
As you can see from this, the side luggage basket will match the seat while the cover will match the canopy, which gives the stroller a really interesting design.
The fabric texture has also changed in the Bugaboo Donkey2. The canopy fabric comes from the Core Collection and it’s more flexible. It also comes in melange so it’s a little bit thicker. If you would rather get a sturdier canopy then you also have the option to choose a fabric and color from the Signature or Premium Collection.
The other upgrade is that the apron now fits the bassinet tighter, which means that your baby is covered a lot better.
You can check out all of the changes that were made for the new 2018 Bugaboo Donkey2 here.
Those are the primary changes that were made for the 2018 Bugaboo Donkey2. Aside from these auditions, the Bugaboo Donkey2 is just as awesome as its predecessor, giving you a fantastic convertible and expandable stroller.
Speaking of which, the Bugaboo Donkey2 2018 expands easily from just a single stroller into a double stroller. This is fantastic for parents that already have one child but they also want another baby in the feature. Similarly to the previous edition, this one has three versions: Mono, Duo and Twin.
With the mono version you can use a bassinet, a toddler seat or an infant car seat. With this version you will have a side luggage basket instead of a second seat. If you would rather turn your Donkey into a double stroller all you need to do is undo the clips on the frame and then expand the frame out. It only takes a few seconds to do, too.
The Double Bugaboo Donkey2 can be used in either Duo or Twin Mode. You are able to click two bassinets, two toddler seats or one of each onto the frame. It’s ideal for parents that have twins or who have two children at different ages. You should keep in mind that the prices for these models are going to differ depending on what you get.
If you are in the market for a stroller that is going to grow with your baby and can expand into a double stroller, then have a look at our ranking of the best expandable strollers for a growing family in 2020. If you are looking for just one single stroller that is able to convert into a travel system or a pram, then have a look at our list of the top 8 convertible strollers.
Here at Signing Baby, we’re pretty big fans of bassinets, but we understand how annoying it can be to remove a sleeping baby from a car seat and then take the time to put them back to sleep again in a bassinet. With that being said though, a lot of babies do sleep better when they are strolling in a bassinet than in a car seat. Only the bassinet is going to give your baby a completely flat position which is going to be best for your sleeping baby.
Of course, not all parents are a big fan of prams and that’s why this is an ideal solution for those parents. You are able to install bassinets and car seats onto the frame, and then you can change them out into toddler seats when your baby is old enough.
It’s incredibly easy to switch between the toddler seat and the bassinet too, because everything just clicks onto the frame. The toddler seats are even reversible, and you can use them for children from 6 months old up to 37.5 lbs. The Bugaboo Donkey2 is also usable with the Maxi Cosi and Chicco Infant Car Seats - all you need is a special adapter.
When the stroller is fully loaded up it’s also very stable and it’s possible to push it with only one hand. You can fit it through doorways without much issue too, which is surprising considering it’s a side by side stroller, and it even has a tight turning radius. You can also take it to the park, through cobblestones and through snow too as a result of the large, foam filled wheels. This is perfect if the roads where you walk are a little bit uneven or if the weather has suddenly taken a turn for the worse.
You may be wondering how the Bugaboo Donkey2 didn’t become more bulky - thankfully, the stroller’s specifications remain unchanged.
The Donkey2 is still 23.6” wide in the mono version and 29” in the Twin and Duo versions. It only weighs 0.1lbs more (29.2 lbs for the last version and 29.3 lbs for the new versions). The folded dimensions are also unchanged (10.5” x 23.6” x 36.6”) Only the side luggage basket capacity has changed, and this was upgraded from 11 lbs to 22 lbs.
If you would like to know more about the features of the stroller, you can leave everything we left out here in our review of the Bugaboo Donkey 2017 below. The other features remain unchanged!
Bugaboo Donkey 2017 Review
The Bugaboo Donkey 2017 is the ideal choice for moms who want to go jogging with their baby, but that’s not all there is to it! We’ve tested a number of different strollers with our own little ones not just for jogging but for everyday use. We can confidently say that this is one of our favorite strollers to date.
If you have yet to hear about this stroller or you are still trying to decide whether to get this stroller or the newer version, then here is some of the basic information about the features. For the Donkey and Donkey2, a lot of the features remain the same (aside from the suspension, wheels, colors and the side luggage basket). We have highlighted the changes in this article.
To start with, this is a convertible stroller which is made up of a double seat frame and different seating options: two toddler seats and two bassinets. You can sometimes buy this as a whole set with all the seats, but it is also possible to buy the base and bassinets separately. You can also use the Donkey for newborns as it is compatible with a lot of the main infant car seat brands.
The Bugaboo Donkey comes with a bunch of add ons and seating options you can use, so you are most definitely going to find something that will be a good fit for you and your babies. The stroller provides parents with a lot of versatility and you can even make your own Bugaboo Donkey stroller with every feature and accessory that you need and want.
While the entire set is quite pricey, it is certainly a good investment that is going to serve you and your babies for a number of years, and it should even grow with them. You can use it as a stroller for newborns using either bassinets or infant car seats, and then you can use it as a toddler stroller with the regular seat.
The stroller has a very attractive design and your baby will have a lot of fun riding in it. Let’s have a deeper look at what the stroller can provide for you and your growing family. Read on to find out all of the most important information about this stroller!
The stroller is a double, side by side frame that you can use with a number of different seating options. You can either use it as a stroller for one child and then replace the second seat with a basket you can use for your necessary items, or you can opt for the two seats for two children.
In this edition you will get two baskets with one positioned underneath the seat. You are sure to have more than enough space for your baby’s wipes, diapers, clothes and any additional stuff that you may need when you are out and about, such as shopping bags. tThen, you can use the extra basket next to the seat to store your essentials such as your purse, keys or phone and some food and drinks or toys for your baby.
You can even use the Donkey as a double stroller with a bunch of different seating options. You are able to swap onto the frame two bassinets, two infant car seats, two toddler seats or you can use some different seats depending on the age of your baby.
You can also push your newborns in the infant car seats. It’s possible to make the Donkey into a pram simply by replacing one of the car seats with a bassinet. This is the ideal option if you would prefer to have your baby ride in an entirely flat position. A lot of parents start out using the stroller in exactly this way, especially if they have twins. When they get older you can just switch them out for normal toddler seats.
One of the best things about this stroller is that you can actually use two different seats, which is incredibly handy if you have both a newborn and a toddler. You can also have one seat facing towards you and one seat facing away if you use toddler seats, so your baby can see mom or the world, depending on their mood. Curious toddlers are going to love this feature as they’ll be able to discover the world around them.
This means that you get a lot of flexibility and the stroller has a lot of functions, which is just what a parent of two young children needs.
The stroller actually has some large wheels. The front ones are 10” while the rear wheels are 12”. These tires are pneumatic, and this means that it is very easy to maneuver and turn the stroller, even when you are stuck in tight places. The wheels can swivel and lock as you see fit. The fixed wheels also mean that the stroller is more stable and it’s more agile.
Regardless of what seat you choose to use, it is very easy to push the stroller. It’s so easy to navigate!
It also turns corners quite well too. The stroller works very well on tough terrain, and you can push it on gravel or grass paths without a hitch. You just need to make sure that you inflate the tires every now and again.
The Bugaboo Donkey Twin comes with a four wheel suspension, though it’s not as good as in joggers. It’s ideal for walking around the city and yet it can still work with sand, dirt and grass roads just fine.
Making sure that your stroller has a good brake is a vital safety feature. The Bugaboo Donkey Twin comes with a parking brake that you operate with your foot.
It is very easy to set and release no matter what footwear you are wearing at the time. Once you set the brake the stroller doesn’t move either.
You can easily adjust the handlebar and it has eleven different heights. This is perfect if there’s a bit of a height difference between mom and dad, as you can shorten and extend the handlebar as you see fit.
With a lot of strollers you can adjust the handlebar by rotating it, so it means that tall parents can often push the stroller when they are close to it and may hit the frame with their feet.
This is not an issue in the Bugaboo Donkey twin as it has an extendable and telescopic handlebar. As a result, tall parents aren’t going to be kicking the pushchair as they walk.
The Bugaboo Donkey Twin is primarily a frame so it doesn’t have its own sun shade. The bassinets and the toddler seat canopy will have the appropriate size and this will give your baby good protection from the elements.
There are two main downsides to the canopies though: They are poorly ventilated and don’t have peek a boo windows. Thankfully though you don’t need to worry about not being able to see your babies, as you can have the seats face you.
You can actually find a specifically designed canopy on the market that has ideal ventilation and lots of head to toe sun coverage, and you can buy this separately. If you do happen to worry about the minimal air flow then it is possible to replace the canopy using this sunshade. Perfect for those shaded summer strolls!
It is possible to push the Bugaboo Donkey with two bassinets, or two toddler seats, two infant car seats or even just one of the above.
To start with, it’s possible to use only one seat and then you can replace the other one with an extra basket. This is ideal for parents that only have one baby but they are looking to have more children. It’s perfect for a growing family.
It is also possible to use the Donkey as a double stroller if you have twins, and you can install the same two seats onto the frame. You are able to use the Bugaboo Donkey Twin with two bassinets or two toddler seats. The regular seats have a maximum capacity of 37.5 lbs.
If you have two children of different ages it is also possible to mix two different seats. All you have to do is click the regular seat and the bassinet into the frame and away you go! The Donkey is pretty versatile and will provide parents with a lot of flexibility.
With the toddler seat, you will also get a belly bar. Your toddler is able to sit facing your way or they can face the big wide world. You can set them in opposite directions and your toddlers can face eachother too as each seat is fixed independently.
There are two recline positions for when the seats are facing forward, whereas there are three recline positions when the seat is facing the parent. You will be able to fully recline the seat but your child isn’t going to be lying totally flat.
Reclining seats can be a good feature to have because when you are on your stroll the toddlers may want to sit up straight to take in their surroundings, but they can sometimes get tired or bored and so they are able to nap in a nearly flat position in this stroller.
Under The Seat Storage
The Donkey comes with a storage area below the seats. Arguably it could do with being a little bigger, because if you are taking two children around with you then you are going to need to take a lot of items with you. The bin can hold a medium sized diaper bag but it’s still pretty small. It’s also not quite deep enough to be able to hold a bigger bag but it is wide so you can store some smaller items there. With that being said, it shouldn’t be much of an issue to be able to hold the essentials in there.
It is possible to access this storage bin from the front, back and either side, which is a very handy addition to have. Some parents have complained about the accessibility though. Arguably it is a little hard to reach when you’re looking for bigger items but this is really only the case when you use a bassinet. If you use the stroller with toddler seats or car seats, it’s actually quite easy to access the basket.
If you have two bassinets then it may be a bit more tricky to take out larger items such as an entire pack of diapers, but it’s still pretty easy to take out small things such as a snack, a bottle or one diaper.
If you intend to only use one seat then it’s possible to replace the other one with another storage basket.
Storage, folding and transport
In order to fold down the Bugaboo Donkey Twin all you need to do is remove the seats and then fold down the frame, which can be done in only five steps. One huge advantage is that it has an automatic lock so you can be sure it will remain closed when you fold the stroller down.
When it’s folded the dimensions are: 20.5” x 23.6-29” x 36.6”. In order to fold and unfold the stroller you are going to need both hands, but it’s still pretty simple to do. It’s also possible to remove the wheels and this can make the storage and transport that much easier.
Most double strollers that you find are going to be rather heavy, but as far as twin strollers are concerned this is actually rather light. The frame only weighs 28 lbs. While there are lighter stroller frames out there this is certainly not the heaviest. You should still remember that it is somewhat heavy, especially if you are going to have or have already had a C-section.
When you are using the Bugaboo Donkey as a single stroller with an extra basket the frame is slightly more narrow than it is on the duo or twin version.
Bugaboo Donkey - Compatibility with Infant Car Seat
You can use the Bugaboo Donkey Twin with a range of different infant car seat models. To begin with, you can use it with the Maxi Cosi Mico, Mico AP, and the Mico NXT, and the Chicco KeyFit and Britax B-Safe 35. If you would like your baby to ride in the infant car seat then all you have to do is fix them into place and ensure that they have clicked into the frame. It also doesn’t require any extra straps which is very useful.
If you have two little ones and you are thinking of purchasing the Donkey Twin, we hope that the review here is going to give you all the information you need to make the right decision for you.
Pros and Cons of the Donkey and Donkey 2
Accessories for the Bugaboo Donkey 2017
The entire set for two children comes with a stroller frame with wheels, two bassinets, two toddler seats, two frames for bassinets and seats, two frames for the canopies, two canopies and leg covers, two bumper bars, a bin and an extra basket, a pump and two rain covers.
You should note here that the Bugaboo Donkey Twin does not come with an additional parent tray or a cup holder. While the entire set has a bunch of pieces and is very well equipped, there are still a number of additional accessories that you should consider investing in. These include a cup holder, parent tray, a car seat adapter, a bug shield, an umbrella and a travel bag. This is actually fairly common to not see strollers come with these items, and usually, parents need to buy the accessories by themselves separately.
Color Variations for Bugaboo Donkey 2017
It is possible to choose the color of the frame, and you can choose from either black or black with silver elements. You can get the base in two different color versions: sand and black. In addition to this, there are eight color variations for the bassinets and canopy, including black, petrol blue or ice blue, red, white, grey, denim and pink. You are able to combine the different colors, and you can choose for the seats or bassinets to be in two different colors.
There is even a newer special edition color called ‘Weekender.’ This has blue seats and canopies, in addition to the basket under the seats, but the bumper bars and handlebar are both brown. This is a very attractive look that is bound to turn some heads out in the street!
There are so many different options and color versions for this stroller that parents are bound to find the ideal version for them.

That’s why it may be best to buy the newer model. While it is more expensive, you really shouldn’t hesitate if you have the budget to spend. With that being said though, the last, more affordable option also works really well and is going to be a reliable stroller that really will be an asset for you and your growing family. If you do have a slightly smaller budget, then, it’s best to opt for the older version.
Bugaboo - A Celebrity Brand
It goes without saying that Bugaboo is a very popular brand, but what you may not know is just how popular it is among celebrities. These strollers are fashionable, fancy and stylish. A lot of very famous actresses and singers walk along with their little ones sleeping in a Bugaboo stroller. So what celebrities have strollers from Bugaboo?
To start with, Nelly Furtado and Hilary Duff both have Bugaboo Cameleon. Chris Hemsworth owns the Bugaboo Donkey that we have covered extensively in this article. Meanwhile, Adriana Lima has a Bugaboo Bee for her daughter to ride in. Sienna Miller also has this model. There are plenty of photos online of celebs using strollers from this mega brand.
Bugaboo Donkey vs UPPAbaby Vista
Of course there was no way that any review of the Bugaboo Donkey Twin was going to be thorough without comparing it to another fantastic convertible stroller that’s a favorite among parents. So, without further ado, here’s out comparison of the Bugaboo Donkey Twin Stroller and the UPPAbaby VISTA. Here we will show you some of the features that are similar in both the strollers and some of the main differences between the two.
Both of the strollers are multifunctional, convertible and can be used by either one or two children
Both the Vista and Donkey models give you the option to install infant car seats, toddler seats and bassinets onto the frame
Both of the strollers have a four wheel suspension and the front wheels are lockable
The latest Bugaboo Donkey2 features foam filled wheels, much like Vista
They both have a foot operated brake
The Vista and Donkey both have extendable telescoping handlebars
Both of the strollers feature an automatic lock and are able to stand on their own after you fold them down
The vista has a lot more space for you to store your baby’s gear. It features a massive basket located underneath the seat which is a lot bigger than Donkey’s - honestly, it’s likely the biggest basket out there. While the Bugaboo Donkey does offer an additional storage basket if you are using the mono version, this is pretty useless if you are using it for two children. With the twin version you only have one basket positioned underneath the seats and this is fairly small, more so than the basket on the Vista.
The Donkey has larger wheels than the vista, measuring 10” vs 8” in the front and 12” vs 11.5” in the back, respectively.
The Vista also has an added feature that is not present in the Bugaboo Donkey. It has a color indicator and this shows if the brake is currently released or if it’s set at the time.
The Donkey canopy does not have peek a boo windows, whereas the Vista has very large peek a boo windows that have a nice magnetic closure. In addition, the canopy on the Vista has better ventilation and features SPF +50 protection. Though, it should be noted that bugaboo does offer a canopy that has decent air flow and a peek a boo window, but you will need to purchase this separately.
The Vista is more lightweight than the Donkey. The frame of Vista only weighs 20 lbs whereas Donkey’s frame is 28 lbs.
The Bugaboo Donkey Twin comes with a rain cover, while the Vista also has an additional bug shield included with the price.
The Vista is designed to be a single stroller that also gives you the option of adding an additional seat (such as a car seat, a bassinet or a toddler seat). If you but another adapter separate you can have a lot of different seating options. The Donkey, however, is a double stroller frame that has three different versions: mono, duo and twin.
There is also one last difference. The Vista is able to accommodate 3 children at once. The brand provides a special platform that allows a third child to sit or stand on it. This is a pretty cool addition for a preschooler.
Something to Remember
Regardless of whether you opt for the Bugaboo Donkey2 or the regular Bugaboo Donkey, the stroller is rather large and heavy and it can take up a large amount of space, either when it’s open or folded down. In addition, while the stroller can last for a number of years and is certainly an investment, you should remember that it’s still a large expense for new parents. In fact, it’s one of the most expensive strollers on the market at the moment.
